Pranayama, a well known word amongst people doing yoga. Well if one thinks of pranayama as a exercise only for health then one is misunderstood . Ofcourse pranayama makes one healthy slowly but in subtle level pranayama touches the core of being if practised properly and slowly . Pancha Kosha are

  • Annamaya kosha
  • Pranayama Kosha
  • Manomaya Kosha
  • Vijnanamaya Kosha
  • Anandamaya Kosha

Beyond all these is the self which is changless in changing world. Pranayama is a bridge between body (annamaya kosha) and mind (manomaya kosha). If prana sancharam (flow) is good then body and mind will be healthy and peaceful. I am not telling that people who are doing pranayama are happy but there are many people who don't do pranayama is happy and healthy. That is because mind(manaomaya kosha) is above pranayama kosha. People with strong mind can only be like this. Say for example, I have a friend who never does exercise, yoga , pranayama but he is happy and healthy that is becuase from childhood he never let the mind down, even when he is in difficult situation , he will tell he is ok and always will be in peace. But to be a strong minded One has to practise in a such a way that mind should be always be in positive way. There lot of other people who are not strong minded. In their life there will be lot of confusion and does not have clear mind to solve the problems in life. For people like this there are lot of techniques in sashtras, for example, chanting, meditation,yoga asanas, pranayama, other exercises, listening to music , spiritual discourses etc. Whateve one does is only to satisfy ones mind. But to safisfy ones mind in proper way and getting control over the body and mind one can use the above techniques. If prana is controlled , mind is controlled and vice versa. Do whatever techniques you need but understand why one is doing.These techniques are only to prepare body and mind to understand that you are beyond body,mind,intellect,space and time. You are that. Pranayama should be learned under guidance. Ayurveda tells a disease in body is due to imbalance in vata,pitta or kapha. Depending upon the imbalance certain pranayama is recommended. As for now If pranayama done wrongly, it can lead to disease which may sometimes cannot be healed.
